As we celebrate Harmony Week from Monday, March 18, to Sunday, March 24, 2024, we reflect on the theme of this year, “Everyone Belongs,” and its profound significance.
This statement aligns perfectly with our global mission: “To empower children, young people, and communities Australia-wide to build a just, sustainable, equitable, and inclusive world, where every person can thrive in body, mind, and spirit.”
In this article, we aim to provide insight into the core of our commitment to inclusivity at our Early Learning Centres.
8 Ways We Make a Difference
1. Cultural Responsiveness:
Our educators and staff members actively respect and collaborate with culturally and linguistically diverse children and families. Additionally, they are deeply committed to integrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives into our curriculum.
At the Y, cultural responsiveness is evident in everyday practice as educators demonstrate an ongoing commitment to developing their own cultural knowledge through collaboration with children, families, and communities.
2.Accessible Facilities:
At the heart of our commitment is the belief that play knows no boundaries. Our sandpits and swings are thoughtfully designed to be accessible to every child, ensuring that the joy of play is shared by all.
3.Visual Aids and Accessibility:
We have incorporated visual aids and positioned items within easy reach, allowing each child to engage with their surroundings independently. From colourful artwork to daily routine charts, our spaces are intentionally designed to support inclusivity.
4.Wheelchair-Friendly Spaces:
Navigating our centres should be easy for every child. Our indoor and outdoor environments are carefully crafted to be wheelchair-friendly, ensuring that every child can move freely and comfortably.
5.Sensory Experiences:
We recognise and celebrate the diversity of sensory needs among our children. Our centres offer a variety of sensory experiences, catering to children with sensory sensitivities. In our inclusive environment, sensory play becomes a tool for learning and engagement for every child.
6.Auslan-Skilled Educators:
Communication is key, and we are proud to have some team members at our centres, equipped with Auslan skills. This ensures effective communication and connection with children who use sign language, fostering an environment where every child’s voice is heard.
7.Professional Development:
Our commitment to inclusivity extends to our educators. We believe that continuous learning is vital in providing the best support for our children.
Our team undergoes regular professional development to stay informed and enhance their skills, ensuring they are well-equipped to support every child’s unique needs.
8.EYES Program:
Our Early Years Engagement Support Program (EYES) assists children and families from our children’s services who may be eligible to receive early intervention or NDIS support into the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
In partnership with families and agencies, we provide a holistic approach to education and care for children and deliver tailored inclusion support plans, guiding educators and families with strategies for the best interest of each child’s individual needs.
We invite you to join us in embracing inclusivity. Every child deserves a space that celebrates their individuality and supports their growth.
At our Early Learning Centres, we are dedicated to creating such a space — a space where everyone belongs, where diversity is celebrated, and every child is valued.
Thank you for being part of our journey towards a more inclusive future.
