Making dreamcatchers is a fun arts and crafts activity that has its roots in Native American traditions. Dreamcatchers can be made with everyday items that can be found around the house, so make sure you use your imagination to think of different ways you can decorate your dreamcatcher!
You will need:
A paper plate
A hole punch
Wool or string
Sticky tape
Feathers
Beads with holes large enough to thread wool (not pictured)
Scissors
Textas, crayons, or paint to colour
Decorative elements (we’ve used glitter glue, cotton wool)
Instructions:
Step 1) Cut out the centre of your paper plate to make a hole in the middle (be careful using scissors you may need a grown-up’s assistance
Step 2) Hole punch 6 or 8 circles around the centre of your hole, evenly spaced apart.
Step 3) Cut one metre of string/wool. Place the wool through the first hole, tape it down on the back of the plate, now thread your string through the holes crossing over in the middle. (this can look any way you wish). With the leftover string, wrap it around the outer part of the plate and tie a knot. This is what you will use to hang your dreamcatcher.
Step 4) Cut 3 pieces of wool around 15 cm long and tape them to the back of your dream catcher towards the bottom 2cm apart. These become the tassels which to attach the feathers and beads to.
Step 5) Thread on one coloured bead to the first piece of wool. Then tie a feather to the bottom of the wool. Lastly, carefully slide the bead back down the wool to cover the feather’s end. If the hole in the bead is too big, you may need some glue to hold this in place.
Step 6) Use textas, crayons or anything else you have in your arts and crafts box to decorate your Dreamcatcher.
Step 7) Hang your Dreamcatcher up for everyone to see and enjoy!
